How Sundowns Broke Kaizer Chiefs’ Long-standing Record
Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club has achieved a historic feat by breaking a long-standing record held by Kaizer Chiefs.
The momentous occasion occurred when Sundowns secured a decisive 3-1 victory against Stellenbosch FC on September 27, 2023.
Prior to their remarkable win against Stellenbosch, the Brazilians had already matched Kaizer Chiefs’ record of 32 consecutive league games without defeat.
This impressive streak was initiated by a previous triumph over the Orlando Pirates, securing a 1-0 victory.
As the pivotal match against Stellenbosch loomed on the horizon, Sundowns’ coach, Rhulani Mokwena, left no stone unturned in preparing his players diligently during training.
Their collective aim was to reach and surpass the revered 32-game unbeaten milestone.
Sundowns’ last taste of defeat in the league occurred in September 2022, when they were bested by SuperSport United.
However, as the match unfolded, Sundowns initially found themselves trailing, with Devon Titus of Stellenbosch FC notching a goal in the 14th minute.
The setback only fueled the Brazilians’ determination, and they responded emphatically.
At the 34th minute mark, Kekana delivered a superb finish, providing the much-needed breakthrough.
A mere five minutes later, Modiba (39′) propelled the Brazilians ahead of Stellenbosch for the first time in the match.
As the clock wound down to the 90th minute, teenager Siyabonga Mabena sealed the victory for Sundowns with a clinical strike, securing a final scoreline of 3-1 in their favor.
With this resounding 3-1 triumph over Stellenbosch, the Brazilians etched their names in history, breaking Kaizer Chiefs’ long-standing record of 32 consecutive league games without defeat.
Previously, Kaizer Chiefs had held the record of 31 games but were stopped (defeated) by Platinum Stars in 2005.
Sundowns’ remarkable victory also signifies their impeccable start to the 2023–24 league season, with a record eight consecutive wins.
Notably, only Kaizer Chiefs had achieved this feat before, when they won their first eight games of the 2014/15 season, ultimately clinching the title that year.
It marked the last time Kaizer Chiefs lifted the league trophy.
