Wayne Rooney, the former Manchester United superstar, recently opened up about his decision to part ways with American club D.C. United.
Rooney’s departure from D.C. United in Major League Soccer has fueled speculation of a potential return to English football, particularly with Birmingham City.
Reports from Telegraph Sport indicated that Birmingham had shown interest in Rooney as a high-profile appointment, following a takeover by the US-based Shelby Companies Limited in July.
As of now, John Eustace remains at the helm of Birmingham City, who have displayed promise in the Championship, currently occupying the sixth position.
In response to his exit from D.C. United and the ensuing rumors, Rooney shared, “What lies ahead, I don’t know. I’ve seen a lot of reports in the media. I’m going back with nothing lined up.“
Of note is Birmingham’s chief executive, Garry Cook, who previously held a similar role at Manchester City and maintains a close connection with Rooney’s camp, further fueling speculation about a potential move.
Rooney explained his departure from MLS, saying, “It’s just the right time.” He elaborated, “I think I’ve done everything I can to try and get the club into the play-offs. It’s not one single thing that has happened; it’s about timing in your career. I have really enjoyed my time here. But I just feel it’s the right time to go back to England. What lies ahead, I don’t know.“
Rooney initially made the move to the MLS in 2018, spending 15 months in Washington as a player before returning last summer.
During his time with D.C. United, the 37-year-old made significant contributions to the team’s points tally.
Now, as he contemplates his next career move, the football icon is heading back to England, leaving fans and pundits eager to see where his remarkable journey takes him next.
