Obafemi Akinwunmi Martins, born on October 28, 1984, in Lagos, Nigeria, is a former professional footballer who etched his name in the annals of UEFA Champions League history at a remarkably young age.

Known for his blistering pace and clinical finishing, Martins embarked on a remarkable journey that saw him grace some of the most prestigious clubs in Europe.

Martins kick-started his professional career with Reggiana in Italy before making a high-profile move to Inter Milan in 2001. It was during his five-season stint with the Nerazzurri that he achieved a remarkable feat, becoming the first teenager to score in three consecutive UEFA Champions League seasons in 2004. This remarkable accomplishment underscored his precocious talent and ability to perform on the grandest stages.

After his successful spell at Inter Milan, where he made 135 appearances and scored 49 goals, Martins embarked on a new chapter in his career by joining Newcastle United in 2006. During his three-year stay at St. James’ Park, he continued to impress, making 104 appearances and finding the back of the net 35 times. His short stint at VfL Wolfsburg followed before he joined Rubin Kazan in 2010.

Martins’ prowess extended beyond club football, as he also represented Nigeria on the international stage. He was a part of the Nigerian squad for the Africa Cup of Nations in 2006, 2008, and 2010, as well as the FIFA World Cup in 2010, showcasing his talent on the global stage.

Martins’ highest-scoring league seasons came in 2004–05, when he netted 11 goals in Serie A, and in both the 2006–07 Premier League and 2014 MLS seasons, where he found the back of the net 17 times, respectively.
