SA Coach Explains Why Chiefs Don’t Have A Single Player Good Enough For The National Team

SA Coach Hugo Broos Explains Why Kaizer Chiefs Lack National Team Talent

As the international break drew closer, South African national team coach Hugo Broos made headlines by not selecting a single player from the renowned Kaizer Chiefs for the upcoming matches.

Broos, the Belgian tactician, voiced his reasons for this decision, emphasizing his belief that the current Chiefs roster lacks players of the caliber required for the national team.

In his preliminary 36-man squad for the friendlies against Namibia and DR Congo, Broos initially included players like Pule Mmodi, S’fiso Hlanti, and Given Msimango. However, all three were among the 13 players subsequently dropped from the squad.

Broos offered his insight, explaining that he perceives minimal improvement in the quality of players at Amakhosi compared to the previous season.

“For the moment, Kaizer Chiefs are still the Kaizer Chiefs of last year,” he candidly told journalists. “They have introduced several new players, and perhaps that’s why they haven’t achieved the results they need.”

Broos pointed out that Chiefs remain significantly behind their rivals, the Sundowns, in the league standings. “They are still many points behind Sundowns, and I’ve been saying it for a year now—for any competition, it’s crucial that the top teams are at the top of the rankings. Chiefs need to improve.”

Reflecting on the recent performance of the team, Broos mentioned his presence at a Chiefs game last Saturday. “I’m very sorry, but at this moment, there is no player who deserves a spot in Bafana Bafana,” he remarked.

Pressed on why players like Yusuf Maart or Mmodi, who were once regulars in his team before joining Kaizer Chiefs, were no longer part of his selections, Broos reiterated his commitment to choosing the best team for the national side. “When making decisions, you aim to assemble the strongest team, and that’s precisely what I’ve done,” he affirmed.

Broos’ comments shed light on the assessment and selection process behind the Bafana Bafana squad while also highlighting the challenges faced by Kaizer Chiefs in achieving their top-level aspirations.
