SA are favorites to win the Africa Cup of Nations because of Sundowns’ success? – Rulani Mokwena

The buzz around the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has taken on a new dimension with the recent comments from Mamelodi Sundowns head coach, Rulani Mokwena.

As South Africa gears up for the tournament, Mokwena believes that the recent success of his club, Sundowns, has positioned Bafana Bafana as one of the top contenders for the title.

One of the most noteworthy endorsements came from none other than Yaya Toure.

The Ivorian legend, who understands the intricacies and challenges of African football, highlighted South Africa’s potential, particularly pointing towards the strong influence of Sundowns’ achievements.

For many, such commendation from a football icon like Toure carries significant weight.

Adding to the accolades was the praise from Jay-Jay Okocha, a maestro of the game known for his sublime skills and vision.

Mokwena reminisced about their interaction, emphasizing Okocha’s kind words about the team.

It’s evident that the football fraternity recognizes the prowess and potential of Bafana Bafana.

However, the road to AFCON glory is never straightforward. Despite the commendations, Mokwena acknowledges the presence of skeptics and critics.

He remains unfazed, entrusting the journey to a higher power and focusing on the team’s preparations and morale.

Yet, it’s not just about the accolades and praise. Mokwena’s comments also shed light on the challenges faced by South African football.

The mention of questionable officiating hints at broader concerns about the sport’s governance and integrity within the nation.

As the AFCON draws closer, South Africa finds itself in Group E, a challenging group comprising Mali, Tunisia, and Namibia.

The team’s base in Khorogo for the group stages signifies the intensity and competitive nature of the tournament.

I’m humbled by that; there’s a lot of talk about Bafana being favorites because of Sundowns’ success. After the AFL, Jay-Jay Okocha spoke to me, a very nice guy who I was privileged to meet when I was doing analysis in the studio,” Mokwena said.

He continued, “He is an incredible human being, and the words he said about the team are incredible. You heard what the Morocco coach speaks about Bafana and the influence of Sundowns players in Bafana – these words are not coming from me.

But there are people who still doubt this team, question their level of performance, and still talk negatively about them—it’s okay, one thing I’ve accepted. I just allow God to let his will be done; that’s it. Let God’s will be done.

There are people outside who see this thing, who value it and praise it, and there are people who should be emotionally attached to it, protecting it with everything they have, but… ya. Then you get this type of officiating; I mean, South African football is in big trouble.” He concluded.

While the weight of expectations grows with each accolade and endorsement, South Africa’s journey in the AFCON will undoubtedly be one to watch.

With the backing of legends like Toure and Okocha and the momentum from Sundowns’ success, Bafana Bafana has the potential to shine brightly on the continental stage.

Only time will tell if Mokwena’s predictions hold true, but one thing is certain: the spirit and determination of South African football are stronger than ever.
