How Chiefs apologized to all PSL member clubs for their fans’ action on August 20, 2023

Kaizer Chiefs, one of the most prominent football clubs in South Africa, found themselves in a situation where they had to publicly apologize for the unruly behavior of some of their fans during a match against TS Galaxy on August 20, 2023.

The incident occurred at Mbombela Stadium and involved angry Chiefs supporters who were seen throwing objects in the direction of the head coach, Molefi Ntseki, following the team’s 1-0 defeat to TS Galaxy.

In response to this unfortunate incident, the club swiftly took action by issuing an official letter of apology.

The apology was communicated through the club’s communications manager, Vina Maphosa, who confirmed that although no one was injured during the incident, the club acknowledged the seriousness of the matter.

The disciplinary aspect of this incident was also addressed by the Premier Soccer League (PSL) prosecutor, Zola Majavu.

He imposed a fine of R100,000 on Kaizer Chiefs, with R30,000 of the fine suspended for a period of 24 months.

Additionally, the club was instructed to issue a written apology to both the league and its sponsors. They were also required to display this apology prominently on their website.

True to their commitment to making amends, Kaizer Chiefs promptly complied with the PSL prosecutor’s directives and issued a comprehensive apology letter.

The letter expressed the club’s deep regret for the behavior exhibited by some of its supporters during the match against TS Galaxy FC.

In unequivocal terms, the club condemned the actions of these supporters and made it clear that such behavior was entirely unacceptable.

Moreover, the club stated that they had initiated a process to engage with their various branches and supporters’ groups to address issues related to supporter behavior at football matches.

This proactive approach demonstrates Kaizer Chiefs’ dedication to ensuring a safe and respectful environment for all fans, players, coaches, and officials involved in the sport.
