Manchester United’s manager, Eric Ten Hag, has offered insights into his team’s performance following their 4-2 win against Newport County in the FA Cup fourth round.

Early Dominance and Defensive Lapses

Manchester United started strongly, taking a 2-0 lead courtesy of goals from Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo.

However, defensive mistakes allowed Newport to make a comeback, tying the score at 2-2 with goals from Bryn Morris and Will Evans. But just before the game ended, Antony and Rasmus Højlund scored two more goals.

Reflecting on the match, Ten Hag acknowledged that his team’s defensive transitions were not up to par, making the game more challenging than necessary.

Ten Hag’s Assessment

The first 35 minutes were very comfortable, leading 2-0. It should have been 3-0 or 4-0. They created chances out of nothing,” remarked Ten Hag in an interview with the BBC.

Our defensive transition was not great. We had to reset to regain control of the game, and we did. Well done, boys.

We controlled the game; maybe we went a little bit slower. We had the chance to go 3-0. Garnacho hit the crossbar. They had nothing, really nothing, and then they scored a goal.

Despite the defensive lapses, Manchester United showcased resilience and quality to secure the victory, with Antony, Bruno Fernandes, and Luke Shaw particularly impressive.

Looking Ahead

With FA Cup progress secured, Manchester United now turn their focus back to Premier League action.

They are scheduled to face Wolverhampton Wanderers on Thursday, February 1, aiming to maintain their momentum in the league.

As Ten Hag and his team reflect on the FA Cup triumph and areas for improvement, they remain determined to perform at their best in both domestic and cup competitions.

Manchester United’s victory over Newport County in the FA Cup fourth round demonstrated their ability to overcome challenges and adapt to evolving match situations.

While defensive lapses were acknowledged, the team’s resilience and quality ultimately secured their progression in the competition.
